Homepage Earth Observation Now Shows Sourced Data and Status
The Earth-system visual now distinguishes LIVE, LATEST, REFERENCE, STALE, and UNAVAILABLE states instead of filling gaps with illustrative values.

The Earth-System Observation graphic on the Alvin Lin research site has moved to a source-aware data presentation. Atmosphere displays temperature, surface pressure, wind, observation time, and source; cryosphere uses NSIDC sea-ice extent; and lithosphere uses USGS counts of M4.5+ earthquakes during the previous 24 hours.
When reliable ocean or biosphere observations are not available, the interface reports UNAVAILABLE rather than falling back to fixed or invented values. This makes real-time observations, latest releases, references, and data gaps visibly distinct.
